Short description
Home and Away is set in the fictional town of Summer Bay, a coastal town in New South Wales, and follows the personal and professional lives of the people living in the area. The show initially focused on the Fletcher family, Pippa and Tom Fletcher and their five foster children Frank Morgan, Carly Morris, Steven Matheson, Lynn Davenport and Sally Keating, who would go on to become one of the show's longest-running characters. The show also originally and currently focuses on the Stewart family. Home and Away had proved popular when it premiered in 1988 and had risen to become a hit in Australia, and after only a few weeks, the show tackled its first major and disturbing storyline, the rape of Carly Morris; it was one of the first shows to feature such storylines during the early timeslot. H&A has tackled many adult-themed and controversial storylines; something rarely found in its restricted timeslot.

What's left behind the scenes
- Sheila Kennelly and Frank Lloyd, the original actors playing Floss and Neville McFee, left the series after the first year of filming when their contracts expired. The show's writers and producers decided to focus more on the younger characters, and Kennelly and Lloyd were told nothing until the very last moment—in fact, they found out about their impending departure in a television magazine. Executive producers stated at the time that both actors would occasionally appear as guest stars, but this never happened, although other characters periodically mentioned Floss and Neville when the plot required it. Kennelly eventually returned in 2000 and has appeared on screen as Sheila several times since. Meanwhile, Lloyd passed away, so the show's writers decided to 'kill off' his character (though this was not shown on screen).
- Debra Lawrence replaced Vanessa Downing in the role of Pippa Fletcher in 1990; however, the show's creators still utilize the actresses' physical resemblance, alternating between them in photographs and flashbacks. In all likelihood, 'A Country Practice' is the only series that practices this.
- Ray Meagher is the only actor from the original 1988 cast who continues to appear in the series. In 2001, Meagher, along with Kate Ritchie (Sally) and Norman Coburn (Fisher), were entered into the Guinness World Records as the actors with the longest tenure in an Australian series. Coburn left the show in 2003 after 15 years. Ritchie appeared for 20 years and left in 2008. Since then, their achievement has been surpassed by Lynne McGrath, who has played the role of Irene Roberts since 1992. After Meagher, McGrath is second in the Australian rankings for actors playing the same role the longest, and the first actress to achieve such a result. Incidentally, Ada Nicodemou, who has played the same role since 2000, has also surpassed Coburn.
