What's left behind the scenes
- Thomas Calabro (who played Michael Mancini) became the only cast member to remain with the project from the very beginning until the very end.
- By the beginning of 1999, 20th Century Fox decided to cancel the series due to steadily declining ratings and increasing production costs. (It was claimed, in particular, that Heather Locklear's fee alone could have funded the entire pilot episode.)
- Throughout six seasons, Heather Locklear was credited as a "special guest star."
- When the series was finally cancelled, those working on the project sold bottled water from the pool on eBay.
- Initially, it was planned that the third season would end with Kimberly bombing an apartment building, but this idea had to be abandoned due to the Oklahoma City bombing on April 19, 1995. The final shot of the season simply shows Kimberly activating the detonator, and the explosion itself was only shown at the beginning of the next season, which was released some time later, in the fall of 1995.
- Actress Hunter Tylo was initially cast in the role of Taylor, but she became pregnant and had to be let go. According to the producers, the actress's pregnancy violated a clause in her contract regarding the consistency of her appearance; however, she sued Aaron Spelling (1923-2006) and the other producers for pregnancy discrimination and was awarded $4.9 million.
- Stephen Fanning was initially cast in the role of Billy, but he gained a noticeable amount of weight once filming began, and he had to be replaced. He was succeeded by Andrew Shue, and the pilot episode scenes already filmed with Fanning were reshot.
- A real apartment building called 'Melrose Place' is shown, primarily from the outside (these shots appear at the beginning of each episode). It still looks very similar to the building as remembered by viewers. The same can be said for other buildings shown in the series (including the D&D Advertising building and Michael's beach house).
- At the beginning of the first season, each episode focused on a single central theme, but the producers later decided that the project could be turned into an excellent soap opera. During this period, the character of Amanda, played by Heather Locklear, was introduced into the series' storyline.
