What's left behind the scenes

  • Brenda and Dylan had sex after graduation, as many graduates do in real life; however, this instance led to neither pregnancy, nor a venereal disease, nor feelings of guilt, and so on, which simply shocked the series' fans. Consequently, an episode had to be inserted into the next season showing these characters regretting what happened and Brenda deciding to break up with Dylan.
  • Initially, it was intended that Dylan would only appear in 8 episodes, as the studio bosses were not particularly impressed by the character or Luke Perry's (1966-2019) performance in the role. While filming the first episodes, producer Aaron Spelling (1923-2006) paid Perry out of his own pocket, but the public loved both the character and the actor, and he was added to the project's regular cast.
  • It took more than one season for the series to find its own audience, so success didn't happen immediately. The Fox network had been formed only recently at the time, and at the end of the first season (1990-1991), the show ranked 118th among all projects; it aired on Thursday evenings, but it was outperformed in every metric by the NBC series 'Cheers' (1982-1993). However, Fox officials found a solution: instead of reruns in the summer of 1991, they filmed and aired new episodes. Almost every other channel was endlessly looping the same reruns, so 'Beverly Hills, 90210' gained a popularity that it maintained throughout the following autumn season of that same year. Filming continued in 1992.
  • Hilary Swank remained in the series' cast for only 16 episodes before she was fired.
  • During the production of the fourth season, Ian Ziering acted like a rock star at one point and trashed his own dressing room (this happened after a scene he had worked hard on and felt he had performed brilliantly in was cut from one of the episodes during editing).
  • Douglas Emerson, who played Scott Scanlon, left the project when he lost interest in the acting profession. After that, he served in the US Army for several years and started a family.
  • Like most pilots, the first episode of this series was a trial, and much changed in future episodes, including the characters' personalities, their appearance, home interiors, and so on. For example, the Spanish-style house that viewers became so accustomed to was not the one used for filming the Walsh mansion. Brandon's car also changed, and the role of Kelly's mother was played by a completely different actress named Pamela Galloway.
  • The school building was filmed at Torrance High School—the same building used in the filming of the series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer".
  • When Shannen Doherty left the project, Drew Barrymore was approached to take over her character. Barrymore declined, as she wanted to focus on film roles rather than television. For a while, it was assumed that the role would go to actress Alyssa Milano; then Alicia Silverstone turned it down, and eventually, Tiffani Thiessen was cast.
  • The show's success is attributed to the end of the Gulf War (1990-1991). The teen drama began as a family-oriented series, but midway through the first season, viewer attention shifted to Brandon and Brenda's friends in high school. The first episode featuring the high schoolers aired in February 1991, on the very day other channels were interrupting their broadcasts for urgent news bulletins from the Gulf War fronts. Since Fox did not have a news division at the time, they continued airing the series, and due to the lack of competition on the air, the show's audience grew sharply.
  • Despite being a soap opera with the typical penchant for pairing and separating as many characters as possible, the series stubbornly maintained a single plotline about Donna Martin remaining a virgin, even as all her friends found partners. This had nothing to do with a desire to portray abstinence in a positive light; it was simply that the project's executive producer was Aaron Spelling, and Donna was played by his daughter Tori Spelling, and he did not want his daughter—even on screen—to have intimate relations with anyone.
  • Gabrielle Carteris originally auditioned for the role of Brenda, but the show's creators decided she would be a better fit for the role of Andrea.
  • The original title of the series was "Class of Beverly Hills".
