What's left behind the scenes

  • In one of the episodes, Balthazar says, 'I find your lack of faith disturbing.' This is a direct quote from 'Star Wars,' spoken by Darth Vader.
  • Shannen Doherty left the project due to constant arguments with Alyssa Milano. In a subsequent interview, the actress stated that she made the decision herself and that no one had fired her. In 2023, Holly Marie Combs claimed that Milano insisted on Doherty's dismissal, threatening to otherwise sue the project's creators for a 'hostile work environment.' Doherty was advised to say she left of her own accord because shortly before filming 'Charmed,' she had already been fired from another project, and her career was hanging by a thread. Doherty was fired after filming the final episode of Season 3; she had no idea that this episode would be her last on 'Charmed.'
  • Julian McMahon (Cole) and Ted King (Andy) auditioned for the role of Leo (Brian Krause). Kerr Smith was also considered for the role of Leo. In turn, Brian Krause auditioned for the role of Andy, as did McMahon and the aforementioned Kerr Smith.
  • During casting, Shannen Doherty stated that she would not star in the series unless Holly Marie Combs was also cast. When Doherty was fired, Combs announced that she was leaving as well, but she was forced to stay on the project through threats of legal action.
  • The only series in television history where the shots appearing behind the credits change in every episode.
  • According to the plot, the series takes place in San Francisco, but it was filmed in Los Angeles. When necessary (such as for bird's-eye view shots or long shots), archival footage of San Francisco from the studio was used.
  • In Season 6, Holly Marie Combs (who played Piper) was mostly filmed in close-ups and wearing baggy clothes to hide her pregnancy until it was written into the storyline to explain how Chris was conceived and born. This plotline had been planned even before Combs became pregnant.
  • Alyssa Milano liked the illustrations in the Book of Shadows so much that she had them painted on the walls of her own home.
  • Kaley Cuoco's character (she played Billie Jenkins) was introduced in Season 8 to give the lead actresses more free time. There were even plans to make her character the lead of a spin-off, but viewers were not thrilled with Billie, and these plans had to be abandoned.
  • Initially, the first episode of the eighth season was filmed without the lead actresses. This was done to allow them to have a break.
  • Chroma key was used to film scenes featuring flying energy balls, teleportation, and other uses of magic.
  • The Book of Shadows weighed over 4 kg and was the most valuable prop.
  • It was initially intended that Cole's (played by Julian McMahon) participation in the project would be limited to a seven-episode story arc, but the producers were so impressed by the actor's performance and his chemistry with Alyssa Milano (who played the younger sister, Phoebe) that Cole's role was significantly expanded, making McMahon a permanent member of the series' cast.
  • Whenever an actor stood by the front door of the family manor, it became clear that the house lacked an actual foyer, as the wall was right behind the actor or actress. The pilot episode was filmed in a real manor, whereas everything else was shot in significantly more spacious studio pavilions.
  • Between the second and third seasons, the producers began developing potential storylines for the third season. Executive producer Brad Kern wanted Phoebe to have a love interest in the new season and for Phoebe herself to become a positive character. Executive producer Constance M. Burge opposed this idea, as a complex love story for Piper (played by Holly Marie Combs) had already taken up an entire season, and Burge believed the focus should now shift to the relationships between the sisters. Over time, it became clear to Burge that the decision in this dispute had not been made in her favor, and she left the project.
  • Due to budget constraints in the 8th season, Leo (played by Brian Krause) was temporarily written out of the script, and Darryl (played by Dorian Gregory) was written out permanently.
  • Lori Rom was initially cast as Phoebe, but after filming the pilot episode, she left the project for religious reasons. Alyssa Milano was cast in the role, and all previously filmed scenes featuring the character were reshot.
  • When Charmed was in development, it was intended that the series would be about three roommates from Boston.
  • Holly Marie Combs is the only actress in the series to appear in every episode of all 8 seasons.
  • Originally, Phoebe's power was meant to be levitation, but Alyssa Milano's character began seeing the future instead, as the special effects would have required a very large recurring budget.
  • The appearance of the demon Balthazar was partly borrowed from the Sith Darth Maul from Star Wars.
  • Alyssa Milano (Phoebe) suffers from claustrophobia. In the series, she is never locked in a confined space; this was written into her contract.
  • Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Brown, Tiffani Thiessen, Soleil Moon Frye, Susan Ward, and Eliza Dushku auditioned for the role of Paige, but in 2001, producer Aaron Spelling announced that Rose McGowan would play Paige.
  • The show's creators hoped to include photos of Shannen Doherty's character in flashbacks and display them in the house; however, they were reminded that doing so would require paying the actress an additional fee for the use of her likeness, so they abandoned the idea.
