Short description

Will, a street-smart teenager, moves from the tough streets of West Philly to posh Bel-Air to live with his Uncle Philip, Aunt Vivian, his cousins — spoiled Hilary, preppy Carlton and young Ashley — and their sophisticated British butler, Geoffrey. Though Will’s antics and upbringing contrast greatly with the upper-class lifestyle of his extended relatives, he soon finds himself right at home as a loved part of the family.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The so-called "Carlton Dance," shown repeatedly in the series, is a parody of a dance performed by Courteney Cox in Bruce Springsteen's 1984 music video "Dancing in the Dark."
  • Jada Pinkett Smith auditioned for the role of Lisa, but was rejected due to the height difference with Will Smith and a "lack of passion" in the chemistry with her co-star. However, Pinkett's introduction to Smith led to their marriage three years later.
  • The scripts for the final episodes of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th seasons were written with the possibility that there might be no continuation. The script for the final episode of the 6th season was written with the full certainty that the series was being cancelled.
  • Will Smith played a charismatic and confident teenager. In reality, as the actor once admitted, he was shy and quite timid around the opposite sex during those years.
  • In fact, Will Smith's names in real life and in the series differ. In real life he is Willard, while in the series he is William. In one episode, the father of Smith's friend jokingly calls him Willard.
  • While working on the future series, Will Smith and Alfonso Ribeiro racked their brains over what to name their characters. According to Smith, Ribeiro jokingly advised him to choose the name with great responsibility, because he would certainly be called by that character's name in the future. That was when Ribeiro suggested he go by 'Will Smith'.
  • Uncle Phil's law firm is named Firth, Wynn and Meyer, which is a reference to the group Earth, Wind & Fire, of whom executive producer Quincy Jones is a huge fan.
  • The series' audience in the US was the largest in the 3rd season and the smallest (by more than 5 million people) in the 6th.
  • The English title of the series, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, is a play on Will Smith's stage name from the late 1980s hip-hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince.
  • The series was planned to end after the fourth season, when the main character returns to Philadelphia. However, fans flooded Will Smith and NBC executives with letters demanding a continuation, and it was decided to keep the show going.
  • The scene where Jazz is kicked out of the house was filmed on location, so they only did one take. Since this character was kicked out of the house regularly, the show's creators specifically ensured that the actor wore the same shirt in every episode where this occurred. Nevertheless, some continuity errors slipped through—the first time Jazz is shown wearing sunglasses, while in some subsequent instances, he is wearing regular glasses.
