Short description

What's left behind the scenes

Peri Gilpin and Lisa Kudrow were both considered for one of the roles. Initially, Kudrow was chosen because she seemed funnier during the auditions, but she was soon replaced by Gilpin, as it became apparent that Kudrow's portrayal of the character lacked decisiveness.
The baby born to Miles and Daphne was named David in memory of David Angell, a producer and one of the series' creators who died in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
Jane Leeves' pregnancy in the 8th season was hidden from viewers through a storyline about her character overeating; after the birth, her absence from the screen was explained by Daphne's departure to a health resort.
Moose, who played the dog named Eddie, was fourteen years old by the time filming ended. The dog's fur had noticeably grayed, and he was practically deaf; after the filming of the final episode, his trainer carried him onto the stage for the curtain call with the rest of the cast. David Hyde Pierce later said that seeing Moose react to the applause was one of the most touching moments.
The show's creators initially planned to cast an actress for the role of the wife of Niles, played by David Hyde Pierce, but after completing the first few seasons, the writers realized it was far more interesting to describe her as a character who never actually appears on screen. Meanwhile, the character became increasingly absurd and contradictory, making it impossible to find a suitable actress for the part.
Guest stars playing people calling into the radio show recorded their lines over the phone. This was not only easier for the celebrities themselves, many of whom had very busy schedules, but it also added a sense of realism to the episodes.
Kelsey Grammer rehearsed each scene only once and memorized his lines immediately before filming the scene in which they appeared. The actor felt that this method brought energy and realism to his performance. While the other cast members and the crew soon grew accustomed to this, guest stars were often bewildered by Grammer's approach to acting.
Lisa Maxwell auditioned for the role of Daphne. Due to a misunderstanding with her agent, Maxwell was under the impression that she had already been cast, although these were only screen tests. Maxwell began criticizing the plot and suggesting changes to it, which greatly displeased the screenwriters, and the role was given to Jane Leeves.
