What's left behind the scenes

  • Blanche did not have a Southern accent in the script. This was the idea of actress Rue McClanahan.
  • Rue McClanahan included a clause in her contract allowing her to keep the costumes sewn for her character. The actress ended up with 13 wardrobes full of designer clothing.
  • It was originally intended that the show would end after the fifth season, but Beatrice Arthur agreed to stay for another two years.
  • Estelle Getty was the least experienced actress of the quartet, which worried her: she often felt that the audience would realize how poor she was compared to her colleagues.
  • Estelle Getty, who played the 80-year-old Sophia, was actually the same age as her colleagues and even younger than her on-screen daughter, Beatrice Arthur. Therefore, when she had a facelift between the filming of the first and second seasons, it horrified the makeup artists, as they already had to work very hard to make the actress look old.
  • In the final episode of the first season, when Rose tells her friends about the "herring war," Beatrice Arthur and Rue McClanahan broke character and laughed until they cried. It was decided not to cut this take.
  • Over the seven seasons of the series, the actresses consumed over 100 cheesecakes, which were sent to the production team from bakeries across the country. In real life, actress Beatrice Arthur (1992-2009) couldn't stand the sight or smell of cheesecakes.
  • When the series first aired, Queen Elizabeth (1900-2002) liked it so much that she wrote a letter to the four actresses asking for a private performance. The actresses performed a sketch during the 1988 Royal Variety Performance—an annual televised variety show held to raise funds for the Royal Variety charity—which Elizabeth attended in person. In this sketch, the actresses arrived in London, chatted with host Ronnie Corbett (1930-2016), and then sat down for dinner, during which scenes from previous episodes were performed.
  • Rue McClanahan constantly fell asleep on set.
  • Four women lived in the house, yet there were always only three chairs around the famous kitchen table. This was done to avoid squeezing all four characters into the shot or to prevent one of them from sitting with her back to the camera. Arthur always sat in the center—due to her height, and also so that the viewer could see her facial expressions when reacting to the other actresses' lines.
  • Initially, Arthur did not want to agree to appear in the series. She felt that it would essentially be a repeat of her and McClanahan's participation in the series 'Maude' (1972-1978), and that Betty White (1922-2021) had already played practically the same role in 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' (1970-1977). Arthur only agreed after learning from McClanahan that she and White had decided to swap roles.
  • The idea for the series was proposed by Brandon Tartikoff (1949-1997) of NBC. Once, while visiting an elderly relative, he witnessed her interacting with a neighbor who was also her best friend. The two constantly argued and disagreed with each other, yet remained friends and felt very warmly toward one another. Tartikoff thought that this could make for a good series.
  • It was one of the few series of that era to feature an openly gay man and a lesbian among its characters. The pilot episode introduces Coco, a gay man and personal chef. In several episodes, Clayton, the brother of the character played by Rue McClanahan, who is gay, appears. In another episode, an old friend of Dorothy's—a lesbian—appears. At least one episode addresses the topic of HIV/AIDS.
