What's left behind the scenes

  • Courteney Cox was originally intended to play Rachel.
  • The role of Chandler could have gone to Jon Cryer.
  • The following titles were also considered for the series: Friends Like Us, Six of One, Across the Hall, and Insomnia Cafe.
  • Originally, a mirror hung in a gold frame on the door in Monica and Rachel's apartment, but someone from the crew accidentally broke it.
  • Ursula Buffay, Phoebe's sister, was a waitress in the series ' hän's Crazy' (1992). In one episode, Fran (Leila Kenzle) and Jamie (Helen Hunt) enter a coffee shop and mistake Phoebe for Ursula.
  • According to TV Guide magazine, Joey's catchphrase 'How you doin'?' ranked 4th on the list of the twenty best TV catchphrases.
  • A poster in Ross's apartment features a Russian inscription: 'To build — one must know. To know — one must study.' There is also a poster in Joey and Chandler's apartment depicting a kangaroo with the Russian text: 'Boxing Kangaroo'.
  • Courteney Cox was pregnant during the filming of the final season. To hide her pregnancy, the costume designers dressed her in baggy clothes.
  • In the early episodes of the series, Chandler and Joey's apartment number is 4, and Monica and Rachel's is 5. These were later changed to 19 and 20 respectively, as apartments 4 and 5 would have been located on the first or second floors of the building, which contradicted the show's plot.
  • James Michael Tyler got the role of Gunther because he knew how to operate a coffee machine.
  • Originally, Gunther was not supposed to have any lines throughout the entire series.
  • James Michael Tyler was working in a Hollywood coffee shop when he was cast as Gunther. Throughout the first four seasons, he continued to work in the coffee shop while simultaneously filming "Friends."
  • Leah Remini was considered for the role of Monica.
  • Joey first says his catchphrase "How you doing?" in episode 4.13, "The One With Rachel's Crush."
  • Joey (Matt LeBlanc) plays Dr. Drake Ramoray in a fictional series called Days of our Lives. There is a series of the same name airing on NBC, in which Jennifer Aniston's father, John Aniston, had a role.
  • During the first two seasons, the series was filmed in the same studio where the show Full House (1987–1995) was shot.
  • June Gable, who played Estelle Leonard, also played the nurse present at the birth of Lea Remini's character in episode 1.23, "The One with the Birth."
  • At one time, Jennifer Aniston was filming this series simultaneously with the movies Bruce Almighty (2003) and Along Came Polly (2004).
  • When the final episode aired in Britain, the cost of a 30-second commercial was 1.2 million pounds sterling.
  • In the early stages of the series' development, Monica and Joey were planned to be the main couple.
  • Jennifer Aniston agreed to appear in the final season of the series only on the condition that filming would be completed by January 2004.
  • Bruce Willis, Christina Applegate, and Paul Rudd appeared in the series after films had already been released in which they starred alongside someone from 'Friends'. Bruce and Christina won Emmys for their guest roles.
  • At one time, the series' theme song performed by The Rembrandts topped the American pop charts.
  • The friends' full names are as follows: Rachel Karen Green, Monica E. Geller, Phoebe Buffay, Joseph Francis Tribbiani Jr., Chandler Muriel Bing, and Ross Eustace Geller.
  • In episode 3.03, "The One with the Jam," Joey's arm is in a protective sling. This is because Matt LeBlanc suffered a dislocated shoulder shortly before filming began for this episode. At the beginning of the episode, Chandler hears Joey jumping on his bed and falling off. This scene was specifically added to the script to explain what happened to Joey's arm.
  • The first and last episodes were the only ones in the series whose titles did not begin with the words "The One..." The first episode is titled "The Pilot," and the last is titled "The Last One."
  • Chandler's parents, Charles and Nora Bing, were named after characters from the movie "The Thin Man" (1934), specifically Nora and Charles.
  • In most series, episodes do not have titles, so viewers have to briefly describe the plot of a particular episode. The creators of "Friends" played with this tradition in a very original way: the title of every episode begins with the words "The One Where..." or "The One with..."
  • The scene of the friends dancing in the fountain, over which the opening credits roll, was filmed at four in the morning at the Warner Bros. studio lot in Los Angeles. The actors were given the lyrics to the song by The Rembrandts, but different music was played as the background track because the show's theme song had not yet been recorded.
  • In episode 6.01, 'The One After Vegas,' the name 'Arquette' was added to every actor's surname in the opening credits as a joke about the wedding of Courteney Cox and David Arquette.
  • Ross's birthday changes several times throughout the series. For example, it is mentioned as being in December at the beginning of the show, but in later episodes, it is October 18th.
  • In several episodes, it is mentioned that Gunther is Dutch. He even speaks a little Dutch. However, Gunther is a typically German name, and in the Netherlands, only people who immigrated from German-speaking countries or have one or two German parents are named Gunther.
  • In the early seasons, there are wooden panels in Monica's apartment that run from floor to ceiling. In subsequent seasons, the wooden panels are only by the refrigerator. In fact, some directors liked to leave their mark on the episodes they worked on in this way.
  • In early episodes, the balcony in Monica's apartment is nearly square, but in later episodes, it is rectangular and much smaller.
  • In one episode, Monica says that her brother Ross never told her anything about his sex life or when he lost his virginity, but in the previous episode, he specifically talks about how he told everyone, including his sister, when he lost his virginity.
  • Rachel's birthday: in one episode, she says she was born on May 5th (Taurus), but in another episode, when a police officer asks for her driver's license, he looks at her date of birth and notes that she is an Aquarius (January-February).
  • In one of the early episodes, it is revealed that the first (and at the time, only) woman Ross ever slept with was his first wife, Carol. However, a few years later, there is an episode where Chandler mentions that Ross slept with the woman who cleaned their dorm building when they were in college. This would have happened either while Ross was with Carol or before he met her. In either case, Carol would not have been the only woman he had slept with.
  • Several times throughout the series, Safeway Select products can be seen; these are common in California, where the show was filmed, but not in New York, where the series takes place.
  • In the 10th episode of season 1, Phoebe's boyfriend, David, is offered a business trip to Minsk in Russia for 3 years; in reality, Minsk is the capital of the Republic of Belarus.
  • In Season 7, Episode 24, Phoebe and Ross enter Chandler's office, even though there is a nameplate with someone else's name on the door.
  • In Season 1, Episode 6, Joey is filming a movie scene with Al Pacino. During the cuts between camera angles, the image flips to a mirror image.
  • In Season 8, Episode 5, at the 6-minute mark during a conversation between Phoebe and Monica, there is a shot where Monica's stunt double appears instead of Monica. Essentially, it looks like this: Phoebe is talking to Monica, but a second later, the nodding head of a completely unknown girl is visible sitting in Monica's place.
  • In Season 7, Episode 12, when the rooftop door slams shut and Ross tries to open it, you can notice that the door shakes along with the wall it is installed in.
  • In episode 4.22 (The One With The Worst Best Man Ever), during the scene where a stripper appears in Matthew Perry's office, you can see Matt LeBlanc laughing behind David Schwimmer and Matthew Perry; this was not scripted but was kept in the final cut of the show.
  • In episode 1.14 (The One With the Candy Hearts), while Joey and Chandler are discussing an upcoming date, Rachel throws a bagel at Joey; it is eaten, but then reappears untouched in the next shot.
  • In the 6th episode of season 1, Joey has the role of 'Al Pacino's butt.' In a shot of the filming (confirmed by the shadow on the wall), it is visible that Matt LeBlanc is wearing underwear, although according to the scene's requirements, he should be naked in the shower.
  • In the 8th episode of season 1, Monica talks to her mother at her grandmother's funeral. As the camera cuts between angles, Monica's hair is tucked behind her left ear in some shots and covering it in others. The position of her hair changes despite no action taking place.
