Short description

The titles of Hank Moody's books—'South of Heaven', 'Seasons in the Abyss', and 'God Hates Us All'—correspond to the album titles of the American thrash metal band Slayer.
The original title of the series is a portmanteau: Californication = California + Fornication.
Hank Moody is based on the writer Charles Bukowski. In the ninth episode of the first season, Karen mentions Bukowski as one of her favorite authors.
In Season 4, Episode 7, in the scene where Marcy and Charlie Runkle are waiting for their appointment at Showtime, posters for other Showtime series can be seen.
In one of the episodes of the first season, Hank meets a prostitute, and when she tells him her name is Trixie, he responds: 'Great name if you're a prostitute.' Trixie is a 'woman of easy virtue' from the series 'Deadwood,' produced by HBO, just as 'Californication' was several years later.
