Short description

After trading in the seemingly charmed life of a gentleman for one of a swashbuckling buccaneer, Stede Bonnet becomes captain of the pirate ship Revenge. Struggling to earn the respect of his potentially mutinous crew, Stede’s fortunes change after a fateful run-in with the infamous Captain Blackbeard. Stede and crew attempt to get their ship together and survive life on the high seas.

What's left behind the scenes

David Jenkins wrote the script after hearing about Stede Bonnet (1688–1718) from his wife and reading about him online. He was particularly interested in filling in the "blank spots" in Bonnet's biography, attempting to understand the motives of a man who abandons his family to collaborate with the infamous pirate known as Blackbeard.
Full-scale sets of the ship The Revenge were constructed in a studio in such a way that they could be partially disassembled and placed on cylinders so they could be rocked during filming. The vast ocean expanses were projected onto screens that served as the studio walls, and at least one actor—Samba Schutte—suffered from motion sickness (at least, according to his own admission on social media). None of the actors or crew members went anywhere near the water during filming, except for scenes shot on the shore.
Blackbeard's costume was based on the protagonist's outfit from George Miller's action film "Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior" (1981).
Blackbeard's long beard was shaved off for the sake of the actor playing the role, Taika Waititi. The beard and wig caused him such discomfort (heat) during filming that he was forced to rest in an air-conditioned tent between takes. Eventually, Waititi figured out a way to get rid of the beard, after which he could comfortably interact with the other cast and crew members instead of rushing back to his tent.
In a skirmish with a Spanish vessel on the way to Nassau (the so-called "Pirate Republic"), Bonnet did indeed sustain a serious injury.
