Short description

Archetypal buddy cops Riggs and Murtaugh are back for another round of high-stakes action, this time setting their collective sights on bringing down a former Los Angeles police lieutenant turned black market weapons dealer. Lorna Cole joins as the beautiful yet hardnosed internal affairs sergeant who catches Riggs's eye.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Joel Silver paid $165,000 for a permit to demolish the building.
  • Riggs (Mel Gibson) eats dog biscuits in order to quit smoking. In "Mad Max 2" (1981), the character played by Mel eats dog food to survive.
  • Bill Frederick, the mayor of Orlando, played a police officer who says "Bravo!" to Murtaugh and Riggs after the building explosion.
  • The building that Riggs and Murtaugh accidentally blow up actually explodes. It is the Orlando City Hall, which was slated for demolition. Demolition experts blew up the building, and the film crew captured the process in detail from multiple angles. Gibson and Glover genuinely ran from the real explosion, without any stunt doubles. Later, participants in all four films would call this explosion the best of all those they had to film.
  • Carrie Fisher polished the script, but her name isn't mentioned in the credits.
  • Number of deaths: 17.
  • When the building explodes at the beginning of the film, the roar heard by the audience was also used in "King Kong" (1976).
  • Due to the film's box office success, Warner Brothers gifted Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Joe Pesci, Rene Russo, Joel Silver, Richard Donner, and Jeffrey Bowm each with a new Range Rover.
  • This is the only film in this film series where the villains did not threaten the Murtaugh family.
  • Please watch the end credits until the very end, as there is a short scene after them.
  • Murtaugh’s boat is called “Code 7”, which is the Los Angeles Police Department’s code for a lunch break.
  • During the scene where Riggs and Lorna compare scars, many of Riggs’ scars relate to events in “Lethal Weapon 2” (1989), specifically the scar from a gunshot wound to the lung and the scar from a knife wound to the leg.
  • The director's cut of the film has a runtime of 121 minutes.
  • During the chase after the armored car, Delores exclaims that it is the "Warrior of the Road." The American title of "Mad Max 2" (1981), starring Mel Gibson, is "The Road Warrior".
  • Filming took place from October 2, 1991, to January 29, 1992.
