Short description

A death row inmate turns for spiritual guidance to a local nun in the days leading up to his scheduled execution for the murders of a young couple.

What's left behind the scenes

In reality, Elmo Patrick Sonnier (1950-1984) and Robert Lee Willie (1958-1984), who served as the prototypes for the character played by Sean Penn, were executed in Louisiana in the electric chair.
The nun, played by Susan Sarandon in the film, was told that she would be portrayed on screen by “a famous actress who starred in the drama ‘Thelma & Louise’ (Ridley Scott, 1991),” and when she was introduced to Sarandon, she exclaimed, “Thank God, it’s Louise!”
The phrase “The dead man walks” is used by guards accompanying a condemned prisoner to his execution.
The rape scene involving Peter Sarsgaard and Missy Yager was filmed in the mud, so before each new take, the actors had to get up, shower, re-dress, and re-apply makeup before doing another take. Filming this scene took all night.
