Boyz n the Hood is the popular and successful film and social criticism from John Singleton about the conditions in South Central Los Angeles where teenagers are involved in gun fights and drug dealing on a daily basis.

This film was John Singleton's debut – he was only 23 years old when he shot it.
The opening and closing scenes of the film are direct references to Rob Reiner’s “Stand By Me” (1986).
To make the scenes of sudden shooting look as realistic as possible, the director never told the actors when the shooting would begin. As a result, their reaction is genuine.
In terms of cost/profit ratio, this film is the most financially successful of all films released in 1991. It managed to gross about $57 million with a budget of only six and a half million.
