Tom Joad returns to his home after a jail sentence to find his family kicked out of their farm due to foreclosure. He catches up with them on his Uncle’s farm, and joins them the next day as they head for California and a new life... Hopefully.

- Banks and large agricultural corporations, which controlled a significant portion of farms in California, were not fond of John Steinbeck's novel (1939). The book was even banned in some states and certain counties in California; a copy did not appear in the library of the author's hometown, Salinas, until the 1990s. They were even less pleased by the news that a film was being made based on the book. The California Farmers Association even called for a boycott of all Twentieth Century Fox films, and the author himself received threatening letters.
