Young Pharaoh Ramses XIII clashes with Egypt's clergy over influence on the affairs of the state and its coffers. inexperienced, but quite ambitious pharaoh is putting up a fight against a powerful clan of priests usurping rule over the country.

The film is based on the novel of the same name by Polish writer Bolesław Prus.
The film was shot in Egypt, Uzbekistan (Kyzylkum Desert), and Poland.
There was never a pharaoh named Ramses XIII. After the death of Ramses XI (XII), Herihor became the new pharaoh.
In the scenes of the pharaoh's troops' military maneuvers, Soviet soldiers served as extras.
In the film scene depicting a solar eclipse, it is shown that the pharaoh and priests of Ancient Egypt knew about the spherical shape of the Earth and the physical nature of eclipses.
Two scenes were cut by censorship in the Soviet distribution: the ritual killing of an Assyrian warhorse by the Egyptians and the procession of Egyptian warriors carrying severed hands of Libyan rebels in baskets.
