A young Prince Asoka works to perfect his skills in battle and also deals with family conflict. During a struggle with one of his step-brothers, his mother urges Asoka to escape to stay alive. While away, Asoka meets Kaurwaki and falls in love, but must use his skills as a warrior to protect her. A dangerous and heartbreaking web of conspiracy follows, which leads Asoka to embrace a Buddhist path.

What's left behind the scenes

Shah Rukh Khan himself suggested Sushmita Sen for the role of the bar dancer.
The name "Ashoka" in Sanskrit means "without sorrow," "without regret," "ruthless." In the beginning of the final dialogue between Ashoka and Kaurvaki, when she repeats his name several times (heard as "Ashok! Ashok!"), this part was inexplicably translated in the Russian dub as Kaurvaki accusing Ashoka of concealing his name. In reality, she is accusing him of what happened on the battlefield – "Ruthless! Ruthless!"
In preparation for filming, Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor learned fencing.
Shah Rukh Khan wanted Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to be his co-star. However, director Santosh Sivan decided that it should be an actress he had not previously starred with in a leading role, and he chose Kareena Kapoor.
