Short description

Young love is poisoned by a generations long feud between two noble families.

What's left behind the scenes

  • John Barrymore drank heavily during the production of the film. MGM studio head Irving Thalberg (1899-1936) insisted that studio guards keep an eye on him during filming to prevent him from drinking. Nevertheless, the actor still managed to get hold of alcohol and indulge. After the filming of one scene, as the cast members present on set began to applaud the actors in that scene, Barrymore interrupted them with a booming: 'Stop the damn clapping! Does anyone have a drink?'
  • The role of Romeo went to Leslie Howard after Laurence Olivier and Robert Donat turned it down.
  • This film became the final project of producer Irving Thalberg (who passed away in September 1936).
