- According to John Carpenter, he became the director of the film because he had already directed the horror film 'Halloween' in 1978, for which he also composed the music, and the producers decided he could direct a biopic about Elvis.
- During filming, Kurt Russell visited Vernon Presley at Graceland, and he insisted that Russell use one of Presley's jumpsuits on set, one that his son had worn in 1972. Russell is shown in Elvis's authentic costume on the DVD cover and in scenes of Elvis in the 1970s.
- The film depicts Elvis performing 'Old Shep' at a talent show as a teenager, although in reality he was only 10 years old, living in Tupelo, Mississippi, and, according to some reports, only placed fifth in that show.
