Short description

After a seven-year absence, Charlotte Andergast travels to Sweden to reunite with her daughter Eva. The pair have a troubled relationship: Charlotte sacrificed the responsibilities of motherhood for a career as a classical pianist. Over an emotional night, the pair reopen the wounds of the past. Charlotte gets another shock when she finds out that her mentally impaired daughter, Helena, is out of the asylum and living with Eva.

What's left behind the scenes

The character of Charlotte Andergast was based on one of Ingmar Bergman's wives – pianist Käbi Laretei.
The film was shot in Norway, as Bergman was having tax problems with the Swedish authorities at the time.
The pianist Charlotte is played by Ingrid Bergman (1915-1982), but the piano playing heard by the audience is performed by the renowned pianist Käbi Laretei (1922-2014), once the wife of director Ingmar Bergman (1918-2007). She even stood in for Ingrid Bergman in some scenes.
