Short description
Finding himself in a new era, and approaching retirement, Indy wrestles with fitting into a world that seems to have outgrown him. But as the tentacles of an all-too-familiar evil return in the form of an old rival, Indy must don his hat and pick up his whip once more to make sure an ancient and powerful artifact doesn't fall into the wrong hands.
What's left behind the scenes
- At the 78th minute of the film, Helena fans out a deck of cards and describes her trick. When the shot changes, the order of the cards in the deck changes.
- The Nazis were genuinely fascinated by all sorts of mysticism and occultism, hence their racial theories and policies, not to mention their love for all kinds of supposedly supernatural artifacts. The SS symbol (double lightning bolt) was derived from Armanic runes invented by Austrian mystic Guido von List (1848-1919). An artifact called the "Spear of Destiny" or "Spear of Longinus," which was used to pierce the crucified Jesus, was kept in the Hofburg Imperial Palace (the winter residence of the Austrian Habsburgs), and Adolf Hitler (1889-1945) was very interested in it, even mentioning it in his book "Mein Kampf" (1923, 1926). Heinrich Himmler (1900-1945) actively searched for the Holy Grail, and after reading the book "The Crusade Against the Grail" (1933), he accepted its author, Otto Rahn (1904-1939), into the SS.
- At the 6th minute of the film, Colonel Weber arrives at the railway station. In this scene, it can be noticed that the soldiers in front of the train are walking on dry ground, even though the windows of the Colonel's car are covered in moisture, suggesting it has recently rained.
- At the 101st minute of the film, when Indiana Jones and Helena drive through the gates, the sun is almost on the horizon. When they stop by the temple ruins in the next shot, the sun is already almost at its zenith.
- At the 7th minute of the film, two motorcycles overtake the car driven by Indiana Jones. However, in the next shot, the car's interior is still lit as if someone is driving behind them. When Jones pulls off the road in one of the following scenes, it can be seen that there is no other vehicle behind the car, and Indiana and the officers are accompanied only by the two motorcycles.
- During a fight scene, Olivier Richters accidentally hit Harrison Ford in the face with such force that Ford was diagnosed with a mild concussion.
- At the 6th minute of the film, Indiana Jones knocks out the driver with a blow, pulls him out of the car, and throws the body nearby before getting behind the wheel himself. In the next scene, two officers get into the car, somehow failing to notice the body lying next to the vehicle.
- At the 44th minute of the film, Indiana Jones asks a mounted policeman to help him stop his pursuers. When Jones mounts a horse in one of the following scenes, the policeman he had previously spoken to has disappeared.
- In one interview, Harrison Ford spoke in detail about how the filmmakers "rejuvenated" him for the flashbacks using digital technology. According to the actor, there is a special program for this.
- At the 3rd minute of the film, when Basil is running through the forest from the Germans, it can be noticed that Toby Jones is replaced by a stunt double in this scene.
- At the 27th minute of the film, the rector points with his left hand to the gift prepared for Indiana Jones. After the cut, he is pointing to the gift with his right hand.
- At the 60th minute of the film, Indiana Jones and Helena run out of the hotel after Follower, and it is a clear day outside. However, when Indiana entered the hotel at the 55th minute, it was twilight.
- At the 4th minute of the film, an aerial bomb crashes through the roof and gets stuck in the floor, hanging on a carpet. When the bomb falls to the lower floors in the next scene, the carpet that was holding it disappears between frames.
- At the 66th minute of the film, a cart with firewood and branches is initially parked along the road. When Helena steers the motorized rickshaw and crashes into the cart in the next shot, the cart is already positioned across the alley.
- To get into shape for the role of Indiana Jones, Harrison Ford regularly cycled over 60 kilometers at a time and took daily walks.
- At the 96th minute of the film, Indiana Jones sets fire to a wax tablet; when the flame dies down, the gold disc inside is covered in a layer of liquid wax. When Indiana picks up the disc in the next shot, traces of wax remain only around the edges of the disc.
- At the 44th minute of the film, as Indiana Jones rides past a marching brass band, it can be noticed that the first trumpeter in the left row is not actually playing the instrument, but is simply holding it at mouth level.
- The film's title references a real object (a device supposedly created by Archimedes), fragments of which were found in 1900 in the wreckage of a ship that sank 2,000 years ago. This object was called the "Antikythera mechanism," as the ship sank near the Greek island of Antikythera, however, "Antikythera" is the name of the island, not the mechanism itself, as presented in the film.
- At the 43rd minute of the film, a van reverses, crashes into, and is stopped by a taxi, which blocks its rear doors. In the next scene, the kidnappers exit freely with Jones, and the taxi is now a few meters away from the van.
- The Antikythera mechanism is a real artifact, incredibly advanced, and is considered the first computer in the history of mankind. However, it was created as a navigational instrument, not a time travel device.
- At the 131st minute of the film, Indiana Jones uses his left hand without any problem, despite having sustained a gunshot wound to his left shoulder in the tomb at the 115th minute.
- At the 68th minute of the film, a Jaguar crashes at high speed into the rear bumper of the Mercedes-Benz in which Fowler is driving away. When Helena climbs back into the motorized rickshaw in the next scene, it can be seen on the right side of the frame that there is no trace of the collision on the Mercedes.
- At the 107th minute of the film, upon entering the tomb, Helena begins to suffocate and cough. Indiana Jones says it is due to methane. However, it is unclear how he identified the gas, as methane is colorless and odorless.
- Mads Mikkelsen plays a former (and, most likely, current) Nazi whose image was based on Wernher von Braun (1912-1977), the most famous of the 1,600 Nazi scientists who, at the end of World War II (1939-1945), were taken from Germany to the United States as part of a secret program called "Operation Paperclip." Von Braun became the head of the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, where the project to launch the Saturn V super-heavy launch vehicle was developed and implemented, and it ultimately became a key element of the Apollo program to reach the Moon. He owed some of his fame in the United States to the "Disney TV" project, where he was presented as a hero of the space race. In the later years of his life, von Braun’s membership in the Nazi Party was usually explained by political expediency, but this claim was later questioned. In fascist Germany, von Braun was the developer and chief inspiration behind the rocket program, which developed the V-2 rocket that killed thousands of civilians. Moreover, these rockets were produced in the underground concentration camp "Dora-Mittelbau" in Thuringia, and the project was headed by none other than von Braun.
