Short description

A group of academics have spent years shut up in a house working on the definitive encyclopedia. When one of them discovers that his entry on slang is hopelessly outdated, he ventures into the wide world to learn about the evolving language. Here he meets Sugarpuss O’Shea, a nightclub singer, who’s on top of all the slang—and, it just so happens, needs a place to stay.

What's left behind the scenes

  • With the exception of Gary Cooper (1901-1961), all the professors are based on Disney's dwarfs.
  • Billy Wilder (1906-2002) wrote the screenplay while still in Germany, but sold it to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer only after emigrating to the United States.
  • Producer Samuel Goldwyn (1882-1974) promised Billy Wilder a $10,000 bonus if the film was successful. The film gained popularity immediately after its release, and Wilder went to Goldwyn and asked him to pay the promised amount. Goldwyn became angry, shouting that he had never promised anything of the sort, and threw Wilder out. That night, Goldwyn’s wife woke up and saw that he wasn’t sleeping, but pacing the bedroom. Goldwyn told her that he had just remembered that he had indeed promised Wilder a $10,000 bonus. His wife asked what he was going to do now. “What choice do I have?” he replied. “I’ll write him a check. For $5,000.”
  • When choosing popular slang expressions of the period, the scriptwriters Billy Wilder (1906-2002) and Charles Brackett (1892-1969)...
  • During the filming of the simulated slap, Barbara Stanwyck (1907-1990) unintentionally broke Kathleen Howard's (1884-1956) jaw. It is said that the actress was shocked by what happened.
