Short description

After a lavish dinner party, the guests find themselves unable to depart... and, over the next few days, all of their elaborate societal pretenses and façades deteriorate as they are reduced to living like animals.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In the church scene, which was filmed first, actress Rita Macedo is visible. However, she was later unable to continue filming due to pregnancy.
  • The film was banned in the USSR, as the idea that people could not leave a party was considered offensive and anti-government.
  • The scene in which a bear and two sheep appear during the dinner party was based on a real incident that happened to Buñuel in New York.
  • The film's title was taken by the director from his writer friend José Bergamin, who in turn borrowed it from the Bible.
  • The director himself considered this film a failure, stating that if he had filmed it later in Paris, he would have gone further in exploring the theme of cannibalism.
