Short description

The friendship between two orphans endures even though they grow up on opposite sides of the law and fall in love with the same woman.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The opening scenes of the film depict the General Slocum passenger ship fire, which occurred on June 15, 1904. This tragedy claimed the lives of 1,021 passengers, mostly women and children. Until September 11, 2001, it was the deadliest disaster in New York City in terms of casualties.
  • It was this film that the notorious bank robber John Dillinger (1903-1934) watched in one of Chicago's cinemas on July 22nd, before he was shot dead. Dillinger was betrayed by Anna Sage (real name – Anna Kumpanash, 1889-1947), a madam in a brothel who knew a friend of Dillinger's. Sage was threatened with deportation to her native Romania, and believed that cooperation with the FBI would be credited to her, promising FBI agent Melvin Purvis (1903-1960) that she would be wearing red if Dillinger was with her at the cinema. (Hence her nickname – "The Lady in Red"). Dillinger received several bullets, but only one wound proved fatal. Sage was later deported from the United States.
