Short description

A gallery of characters in Brooklyn in the 1950s are crushed by their surroundings and selves: a union strike leader discovers he is gay; a prostitute falls in love with one of her clients; a family cannot cope with the fact that their daughter is illegitimately pregnant.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Jennifer Jason Leigh had to gain 10 kg for the role.
  • Jennifer Jason Leigh had to gain 10 kg (22 lbs) for the role.
  • Ralph Bakshi attempted to make this film, with himself and Steve Krantz as producers, and Robert De Niro starring in a script by Hubert Selby Jr. Nothing came of it because Bakshi and Krantz had a falling out. Bakshi soon befriended Selby Jr., and they reviewed several scripts on other topics, but it all led nowhere.
  • Patricia Arquette was initially cast in the role eventually played by Jennifer Jason Leigh, but she became pregnant and left the project before filming began.
