Director Leonard Nimoy (1931-2015) reviewed video recordings of about two thousand sets of twins auditioning for the role of Mary before choosing Lisa and Michelle Blair. Before deciding on them, he met four pairs of twins in person.
The Pampers company paid $50,000 for product placement of their diapers.
When a casting call for 100 women as extras for a party scene at Tom Selleck's character's house was announced, over 5,000 applicants expressed interest, hoping if not to get a part, then at least to catch a glimpse of Selleck or some of the other actors. The 4,900 women who weren't selected never saw Selleck or anyone else, as the actors were at another filming location at the time. The chosen hundred women spent four days 'partying' with Selleck while the scene was being filmed.
During the two-week rehearsal period before filming began, then-single Tom Selleck and Steve Guttenberg took married Ted Danson with them on a spree. The idea was to visit several nightclubs, bars, and restaurants in Toronto to get better acquainted with the roles of bachelors they were to play. Wherever they went during this spree, they caused a sensation.
