Short description

Against formidable odds -- and an old-school diving instructor embittered by the U.S. Navy's new, less prejudicial policies -- Carl Brashear sets his sights on becoming the Navy's first African-American master diver in this uplifting true story. Their relationship starts out on the rocks, but fate ultimately conspires to bring the men together into a setting of mutual respect, triumph and honor.

Billy Sunday, played by Robert De Niro, is based on two real people from the life of Carl Brasher.
Carl Brashear (1931-2006) joined the Navy in 1948. He was one of the first African Americans to graduate from the Navy Diver School as a rescue diver. He became the first U.S. Navy diver to be fully and unconditionally restored to duty after the amputation of a leg resulting from an injury sustained during a rescue operation. Brashear retired on April 1, 1979, after 31 years of service.
The only one who supported the main character from the very beginning was diver Alberto Jose de Nascimento from Brazil, but this character was not included in the film's plot.
