Short description

When a social worker is sent to check on a traumatized elderly woman whose family have moved in at the site of a notorious murder case, she unwittingly unleashes a cycle of terror that transmits via its victims.

What's left behind the scenes

The house where filming took place was rented specifically for this project. When the franchise became popular, the house began to attract tourists, and in 2019 it was demolished.
The makeup for the ghosts of Kayako and Toshio (played by Takako Fuji and Yūya Ozeki respectively) took 2 hours.
Yūya Ozeki is afraid of cats, so filming his character with a beloved cat named Mar was very difficult.
Takako Fuji practiced ballet and acrobatics, so all the seemingly impossible bends and jerky movements of her character she performed herself; no computer graphics were used.
Two versions of the film – (R-rated) and PG-13 – were presented for test screenings. After a brief debate, it was decided to release the less harsh version, from which the most gruesome scenes were removed.
Yuya Ozaki, who played the ghost boy, is terribly afraid of cats in real life. Nevertheless, throughout the film, we see his character with a cat in his arms.
The attic of the ominous house was a separate structure. This provided more space for the film crew to maneuver within the house itself.
By the fourth day of release, after the film unexpectedly grossed 39 million dollars in its opening weekend, the decision to create a sequel was made.
The sounds preceding the appearance of the ghost woman were produced using an ordinary comb.
The eerie sound emanating from the mouths of all the ghosts was recorded using the voice of Takashi Shimizu himself.
Before filming began, the entire crew performed a sort of ritual, secretly hoping that nothing terrible would happen to them while working on the picture. In any case, the shoot did indeed proceed without incident.
The filming locations for the remake almost entirely mirrored the sets of the original film.
Despite the language barrier, Sarah Michelle Gellar became seriously interested in studying Japanese culture.
The full version of the film has a runtime of 97 minutes.
