The soundtrack for the film was intended to be recorded by the British rock band Queen. However, this idea was not realized.
Rob Lowe broke his nose during the filming of a fight scene.
The film was originally intended to be shot in the summer of 1982 in New Hampshire, specifically at the Wentworth by the Sea hotel, which had closed a year prior. Shortly before pre-production began, director Tony Richardson (1928–1991) and producer Neil Hartley (1916–1994) notified state authorities that the film's sponsor (Pizza Hut) had changed its mind, leaving the production without funding. As a result, the film was shot the following year in Canada for less money than originally planned, thanks to a very favorable exchange rate.
