Short description
A man from the future arrives at a diner in Los Angeles where he must recruit the precise combination of disgruntled patrons to join him on a one-night-six-block quest to save the world from the terminal threat of a rogue artificial intelligence.
What's left behind the scenes
- According to director Gore Verbinski, the AI was intentionally made to resemble a psychopath in need of emotional support, rather than being cold and calculating (as AI antagonists are usually portrayed), because this approach better reflected his own view of AI as a surrogate for human relationships and creativity.
- On the wall of the diner, the words 'The Cake is a Lie' can be seen, which is a reference to the computer game Portal by Valve Corporation. A poster for a Valve game hangs on the wall in the room of the son of the character played by Juno Temple.
- Each "Groundhog Day" begins exactly at 10:10 PM.
- When Sam Rockwell's character first appears in the diner, a plush robot toy flashes on a slot machine screen, which closely resembles the toy from the film's finale.
- Initially, screenwriter Matthew Robinson wrote a pilot script for a television project titled 'Don't Trust People Under 30' about a student's attempts to bond with other students. Realizing he didn't have enough material for a TV series, Robinson shifted the focus of the script from the student to a person from the future, and over time, he ended up with a screenplay for a feature film. Producer Irwin Stoff presented the script to Gore Verbinski, who liked it; the script went into production, and Verbinski became the project's director.
