Short description

A portrait of union leader James R. Hoffa, as seen through the eyes of his friend, Bobby Ciaro. The film follows Hoffa through his countless battles with the RTA and President Roosevelt.

What's left behind the scenes

  • With the exception of the conversation between Hoffa and Robert Kennedy at the beginning of the film, practically all other conversations between them are taken verbatim from the court hearing transcript.
  • Jack Nicholson's makeup consisted only of a prosthetic nose and dentures.
  • Filming was organized in the Ambassador Hotel, where the verdict in the Rodney King beating case (1965-2012) was once announced. That evening, riots broke out in Los Angeles, but filming continued late into the night. The next morning, the city appeared calm and quiet, so filming began as planned. However, by 2 p.m., the riots had become so fierce that city authorities revoked the filming permit. Actors, crew members, and extras were ordered to go home amidst smoke, gunfire, and congested roads. They were able to return and complete filming about three weeks later.
  • When the main characters, played by Jack Nicholson and Danny DeVito (the film's director), encounter a convoy of trucks on their way to prison, the Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary in Pennsylvania can be seen in the background, where these characters previously served their sentences.
