Ti West’s Ebenezer Reimagines A Christmas Carol as Gothic Horror With Johnny Depp

Behind the Scenes: Cinema: Ti West’s Ebenezer Reimagines A Christmas Carol as Gothic Horror With Johnny Depp

Paramount Pictures opens Ebenezer on November 13, and this is not a cozy holiday movie. Johnny Depp stars as Ebenezer Scrooge in Ti West’s darkly stylized version of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol.

West, the filmmaker behind X, Pearl and MaXXXine, directs from a script by Nathaniel Halpern. Early footage has sold the film as a gothic fantasy that leans into the ghost story at the heart of the 1843 novella.

The story

The bones are familiar: the ghost of Scrooge’s old partner Jacob Marley appears on Christmas Eve to warn him, and three spirits follow to confront him with his past, his present and the future he is heading toward.

The cast

  • Johnny Depp as Ebenezer Scrooge;
  • Arthur Conti as young Ebenezer;
  • Rupert Grint as Bob Cratchit;
  • Daisy Ridley as Emily Cratchit;
  • Ian McKellen as Jacob Marley;
  • Andrea Riseborough as the Ghost of Christmas Past;
  • Tramell Tillman as the Ghost of Christmas Present;
  • Sam Claflin as Fred;
  • Ellie Bamber as Isabel Fezziwig.

The production

Shooting began in January 2026 in Dublin and London, including the Historic Dockyard Chatham in Kent, on a budget of about $38 million. Emma Watts produced and Checco Varese is the cinematographer. Depp unveiled the first footage at CinemaCon in April and turned heads by showing up at Comic-Con in character.
