Matchbox Turns Mattel’s Toy Cars Into a John Cena Spy Caper for Apple TV

Apple TV rolls out Matchbox the Movie on Friday, October 9. John Cena stars in the action comedy built around Mattel’s die-cast cars, with Extraction director Sam Hargrave calling the shots.

Apple Studios, Skydance and Mattel Studios produced the film, the latest title on the slate Mattel ramped up after Barbie became a phenomenon.

The story

Cena plays Sean Walker, an ex-soldier now working undercover for the CIA. When he comes home to the small town where he grew up, he reconnects with the friends he used to race toy cars with, and trouble follows him there. The group is drugged and abducted by a crew after a nuclear warhead, and the CIA decides the old friends took the bomb. Their only way out is to steal it back.

The filmmakers

A former stuntman who coordinated action on Marvel movies, Hargrave directed both Extraction films for Netflix before taking on Matchbox. David Coggeshall wrote the script; Pedro Luque shot it, Dirk Westervelt edited and Alex Belcher composed the score. Skydance’s David Ellison is among the producers.

Production hopped from Budapest in January 2025 to Morocco in March, with stops in Casablanca, Erfoud and the Merzouga dunes, before wrapping in Slovakia in April. The film runs 126 minutes.

Why Matchbox

The brand dates back to 1950s Britain, when die-cast models were sold in boxes no bigger than a matchbox. Mattel owns it today, and the movie treats the toys as a shared childhood memory rather than product placement: the kids who raced them grew up to drive the real thing.

Release

Apple unveiled the trailer in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con in July. Matchbox streams worldwide from October 9; reviews are not out yet.
