The new live-action movie opens October 16 from Paramount, including in IMAX, following the 1994 Jean-Claude Van Damme film and 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.
Director Kitao Sakurai has cast it like a crossover event: movie stars, WWE headliners, a rapper, a UFC champion and a country singer all share the arena.
The story
It is 1993. Ryu and Ken Masters, once close, have gone their separate ways until Chun-Li recruits both of them for the World Warrior Tournament. Neither realizes the competition is a front for a conspiracy that will pit them against each other and the demons of their past.
The tone is action comedy.
The roster
The casting maps neatly onto the game’s character select screen:

Andrew Schulz turns up as Dan Hibiki, alongside Eric André, UFC star Alexander Volkanovski and Kyle Mooney.
Behind the scenes
Legendary landed the live-action rights in April 2023 and first tapped Danny and Michael Philippou, the Talk to Me directors, who exited in June 2024 to make their follow-up. Sakurai, known for Bad Trip and The Eric Andre Show, took over in February 2025.
The release plan shifted as well. Sony originally had the film dated for March 2026, but after that deal lapsed Paramount picked up distribution in September 2025.
The production
Cameras rolled from August 18 to November 12, 2025, at Disney Studios Australia under the working title Punch. T.J. Fixman and Sakurai wrote the script from a story by Dalan Musson and Gary Dauberman, with Ken Seng as cinematographer. The film runs 119 minutes.
Momoa also produces, and Legendary Comics is backing the launch with a prequel anthology — including a Bison story written by Dastmalchian himself.
