Ali Hazelwood’s 2021 novel hit the New York Times bestseller list and has sold more than 750,000 copies, giving the adaptation a large built-in audience.
The setup
Reinhart plays Olive Smith, a biology PhD candidate who, desperate to prove to her best friend that she is dating, kisses the first man she runs into in the hallway. That man is Dr. Adam Carlsen (Bateman), the department’s most feared professor.
Surprisingly, Adam agrees to keep up the act, since a pretend relationship helps him too. What starts as a strategic arrangement turns into an experiment in chemistry that neither of them planned for.
A Star Wars origin story
Hazelwood first wrote the story in 2018 as a Star Wars fan fiction titled “Head Over Feet,” built around Rey and Kylo Ren. She renamed the characters, stripped out the galaxy far, far away and relocated everything to Stanford before publishing it as a novel.
The book launched her series of romances about women in STEM, followed by Love on the Brain, and finished runner-up in the Romance category of the 2021 Goodreads Choice Awards by fewer than 700 votes.
Cast and filmmakers
Reinhart is best known for Riverdale, while Bateman appeared in Kenneth Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile. Rachel Marsh plays Olive’s friend Anh, with Jaboukie Young-White, Nicholas Duvernay and Arty Froushan also in the cast.
Scanlon previously directed the rom-coms Set It Up and People We Hate at the Wedding. Sarah Rothschild wrote the screenplay, Laura Karpman composed the score and Elizabeth Cantillon produced. Announced in October 2022, the film shot in Montreal in July and August 2025.
What fans can expect
The trailer, released in late August, includes several scenes readers have been waiting for — the hallway kiss, the sunscreen moment and the shared hotel room. Reinhart has said she hopes it feels “timeless,” the kind of movie you watch again with friends.
