What's left behind the scenes

The role of the island of the nymph Calypso, where she held Odysseus for seven long years, was played by the Turkish springs of Pamukkale.
Work on the film took place under difficult conditions. Torrential rains fell and piercing winds blew almost the entire time. Nevertheless, the film crew slogged away on a television schedule, working 70–90 hours a week. As a result, Armand Assante contracted pneumonia, and on one of the filming days, more than a hundred people sought medical assistance at once.
The producers repeatedly pushed Konchalovsky to include a scene with the Sirens. They wanted to cast famous top models, such as Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford, in the roles. However, the director considered the Sirens to be a terrible cliché and resisted as much as he could. Konchalovsky postponed the filming of the episode until the very last moment, until the budget was exhausted. Thus, "The Odyssey" remained without Sirens.
Open spaces were filmed in Greece and Turkey, ocean scenes in a special pool on the Maltese island of Gozo, and studio episodes in England. As for the realm of Hades, it was "placed" inside an actual crater of an extinct volcano.
