What's left behind the scenes
- While preparing for the role, Julia Garner visited Anna Delvey (born Anna Sorokin) in prison on Rikers Island. Delvey was interested in the progress of the filming and asked how the actress would portray her. At times, Garner felt intimidated by her, despite the presence of the screenwriter and journalist Jessica Pressler during their meetings.
- Vivian Kent, played by Anna Clumsky, is based on the real-life journalist Jessica Pressler.
- The miniseries does not mention that Netflix and producer Shonda Rhimes began working on it nearly a year before the actual trial of Anna Sorokin, whom they learned about through Jessica Pressler's article. Pressler personally attended the trial, but by that time, she had already left the New York magazine for which she wrote the original piece.
- The release of the miniseries was postponed by more than a year due to the coronavirus pandemic. A significant portion of the filming was completed before the lockdowns began in March 2020, but because the series was not shot in chronological order, the crew and actors had to reunite in mid-2021 to finish filming. This time gap is noticeable in the background of all location scenes: a single episode might include scenes filmed during the cold New York winter as well as scenes filmed during the summer.
