What's left behind the scenes

  • On-location or outdoor filming was rare. Instead, the emphasis was placed on filming in a state-of-the-art pavilion at the German film studio in Potsdam-Babelsberg, using screens surrounding the set that could broadcast the necessary imagery. During the first few days of filming, some actors even suffered from motion sickness because they were surrounded on all sides by highly realistic images of the open ocean.
  • Some characters in the series receive letters in envelopes with a black border. In the era depicted, such envelopes were used exclusively for sending death notices. This border informed the recipient of the nature of the correspondence and gave them time to prepare for the terrible news.
  • Screenwriters of various nationalities worked on the series. According to director Baran bo Odar, all scripts were initially written in English, after which the non-English portions were sent for translation. By the director's order, copies of the script with phonetic transcriptions were always available on set, and linguists were present to ensure the accuracy of the dialogue.
  • Four variations of an equilateral triangle serve as designations for earth, air, fire, and water. The shipping company's logo is a symbol representing earth.
  • Each episode ends with a classic rock song that relates to the plot of the current episode or the plot of the next one.
  • The first project for which the German Federal Film Fund allocated the maximum amount of 10 million euros.
