Short description

After stealing the Tesseract during the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” an alternate version of Loki is brought to the mysterious Time Variance Authority, a bureaucratic organization that exists outside of time and space and monitors the timeline. They give Loki a choice: face being erased from existence due to being a “time variant” or help fix the timeline and stop a greater threat.

What's left behind the scenes

The design of the Time Variance Authority headquarters was based on the Marriott Marquis hotel in Atlanta, a fifty-story building with a full-width atrium featuring its own elevators and bridges.
The series takes place after the events of the sci-fi action film Avengers: Endgame (2019) by Anthony and Joe Russo, where Loki was captured during the Battle of New York (as mentioned in Joss Whedon's sci-fi action film The Avengers (2012)), but escaped with the Space Stone to collect all the Infinity Stones. In doing so, he created a new timeline in which Loki was not a prisoner in Asgard, and in which none of the events described in Alan Taylor's Thor: The Dark World (2013), Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok (2017), and Anthony and Joe Russo's Avengers: Infinity War (2018) occurred. However, as in Taylor's film, he witnessed the death of his own mother, Frigga, which became a significant event in his redemption arc.
In the comics, all agents of the Time Variance Authority resembled Mark Gruenwald (1953-1996) of Marvel Comics, whose duties as an editor included maintaining the integrity of the Marvel universe.
The Time Variance Authority sets were specifically designed to resemble typical government institutions of the 1960s and 1970s—down to the typewriters, old film reels, rotary phones, and other period-appropriate items.
Instead of reading the Marvel comics directly as part of his preparation for the role, Owen Wilson asked Tom Hiddleston to explain everything to him about how the Marvel Cinematic Universe works.
The episode in which Loki cuts Sif's hair (played by Jaimie Alexander) is based on a myth according to which Loki (the god of mischief, deceit, and cunning) cut off all of Sif's hair, not just a lock. When Thor found out, he began to beat Loki until the latter promised to find the Dark Elves, who possessed the magical ability to create and grow hair.
