What's left behind the scenes

With the exception of Colin, played by Mark Proksch, all the vampire characters wear prosthetic fangs that are specially attached to their teeth. Such complexities were necessary because standard prosthetic fangs hindered the actors' ability to speak.
Natasia Demetriou played the first female vampire as one of the main characters in the 'What We Do in the Shadows' universe. The series creators, Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, had long wanted to feature a female vampire, but they were held back by a lack of funds, and the friends they invited for the role never showed up for filming.
Like the original 2014 film, a significant portion of the first season was filmed outdoors. This presented difficulties, as filming took place during winter nights in Toronto. By the time they reached the second season, the screenwriters began writing plots that unfolded entirely indoors, and they sought to keep outdoor filming to a minimum.
Colin Robinson, played by Mark Proksch, is a psychic vampire. Such beings were first described by the English writer and occultist Dion Fortune (1890-1946) in a book on psychic self-defense. Fortune believed that such vampires actually exist and claimed to have encountered them herself, although the concept has since come to be perceived metaphorically.
It was originally intended that Guillermo de la Cruz, played by Harvey Guillén, would be 20 years old. Guillén was the last person invited to audition for the role, and his age did not match the character's. To look older than he actually was during the auditions, Guillén wore round-lens glasses, like those of director Guillermo del Toro, and styled his hair with a center part. He was cast in the role just a couple of days before filming began.
