What's left behind the scenes

The appearance of the character played by Danny McBride is based on Elvis Presley (1935-1977) and his friends from the so-called 'Memphis Mafia.' Kelvin, in turn, imitates Christian rockers.
During breaks between filming, Adam Devine and Tony Cavalero often exercised. The writers incorporated these activities into the storyline, believing it would be a perfect fit for these characters.
Actor, director, and writer Danny McBride claimed that the series is not directed against religion as such, but rather mocks hypocrites. He himself grew up in a religious environment.
Danny McBride wrote the role of Judy specifically for Edi Patterson, with whom he starred in the series Vice Principals (2016-2018).
Adam Devine, who plays Kelvin, based his vision of the character on trendy priests who try to attract celebrities to their congregation. He jokingly said that his character sports a mohawk because he wants to be as close to the Lord as possible, even if only through the height of his hairstyle.
In the original script written by McBride, it was envisioned that the pastor would be caught committing adultery and would resort to blackmail just to prevent the news from spreading among the congregation. The Gemstones were meant to be mere parishioners and nothing more. At some point, however, McBride realized that it would be more interesting to write directly about the Gemstones and rewrote the script.
The title of the series is a reference to the 12 precious stones on Aaron's breastplate from the Old Testament.
