CDC researcher Abby Arcane investigates what seems to be a deadly swamp-born virus in a small town in Louisiana but she soon discovers that the swamp holds mystical and terrifying secrets. When unexplainable and chilling horrors emerge from the murky marsh, no one is safe.

What's left behind the scenes
- The town of Marais in Louisiana is fictional. Its name translates from French as 'swamp'.
- With the exception of the pilot episode, as well as the episodes "He Says" and "Anatomy Lesson," the titles of all other episodes are taken from Bruce Springsteen songs.
- The series was shot in CinemaScope (a widescreen anamorphic cinematic system based on the use of standard 35mm film), which is rare for television series.
- Swamp Thing, a character from DC Comics' Vertigo imprint, first appeared in comics in 1971 and later became the protagonist of his own solo series.
