What's left behind the scenes

  • Jared Harris held the cast of the first season in such high esteem and respect that he even offered some of his own lines to their characters and praised their acting abilities to the skies.
  • In the third episode of the first season, a stopwatch can be seen in the photographer's hands with 'Made in USSR' written on it, even though the film is set in the 19th century.
  • To authentically portray a starving person, Adam Nogaites went on a severe low-calorie vegetarian diet. He became so thin that his body began to consume its own organs, forcing the actor to reintroduce meat into his diet.
  • Producer Sue Hue insisted that the Inuit be portrayed tactfully in the first season, as the British and other Europeans had not believed the Inuit accounts of seeing Franklin's expedition, although the truthfulness of these stories was later confirmed.
  • According to producer Dave Kighanich, it was originally intended to be an anthology, but the initial plan was to film five seasons linked by a common setting (the Arctic). The first season would have been about the Franklin expedition, the second about one of the rescue expeditions, possibly that of John Rae (1813-1893), and then the action would move to the 1950s, then the 1980s, and finally to the present day. Kighanich left the project after completing work on the first season, and without him, it was decided to remove the geographical constraints and not limit the series to the Arctic alone.
  • It was originally intended to be a feature film for the big screen, with David Fincher serving as director.
  • The HMS Erebus was discovered in 2014, and the HMS Terror—which was 'well-preserved'—in 2016, shortly before the series premiered in 2018 (referring to the ships of the Franklin expedition).
  • The series creators believed they would have to freeze the Budapest studio where the first season was filmed to depict the conditions of the Far North; however, it turned out to be so cold in the city that additional freezing was not even necessary.
  • In the second season, George Takei plays one of the interned Japanese. Takei's own family was indeed interned when he was only 5 years old. They were sent to an internment camp at a lake in Lake County, California, which is mentioned several times in the series. As with his character in the show, some of Takei's relatives died in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.
  • At one point, at the end of a filming day, while the actors—still in costumes and makeup that made them look like the living dead—were waiting to leave for their hotel for the night, they came across a car accident involving two vehicles and rushed to help the injured drivers. Completely forgetting how they looked to outsiders, the actors began to assist the people in the cars and were very surprised when the victims began to scream at the top of their lungs in terror.
  • Almost all of the ice scenes in the first season were created with the extensive use of digital technology.
