What's left behind the scenes

  • In the parking lot scene of the pilot episode, someone can be heard shouting: "It's going down!" (Poneslos!). As it happens, this is the title of one of Donald Glover's (stage name Childish Gambino) songs, as well as the name of a popular website where videos of fights and arguments are posted.
  • The ninth episode features the cover of Childish Gambino's (the stage name of Donald Glover) third studio album, Awaken, My Love!. This occurred prior to the album's official release on December 2, 2016.
  • Donald Glover and Hiro Murai, who directed several episodes, have worked together many times in the past. Murai directed numerous music videos for Glover, who is both an actor and a musician. He also directed the short film 'Clapping for the Wrong Reason' (2013), written by Glover. The film was released as a prelude to Glover's second album, 'Because the Internet' (2013).
  • The scene with the glowing lemon sauce is a tribute by the show's creators to Quentin Tarantino's black comedy 'Pulp Fiction' (1994), where a similar glow emanates from the briefcase when it is opened by Samuel L. Jackson's character, Jules.
  • Donald Glover and his brother Steve wrote all of Paperboi's lyrics.
  • In the 3rd episode, the drug dealers are played by members of the Atlanta rap group Migos.
  • T-Pain, mentioned by Alfred Miles, is a rapper, producer, and actor. His real name is Fahad Rashid Najim. He lives in Atlanta with his wife and children.
  • In the 5th episode, Lloyd (Lloyd Polite Jr.), a singer-songwriter from Atlanta, appears on screen in a cameo role.
