What's left behind the scenes

  • Among other sources, Jonathan Nolan drew inspiration from computer games, including BioShock Infinite, Red Dead Redemption, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, as well as games by BioWare.
  • When the train arrives in Westworld and the passengers look out the windows, they see the expanses of Utah. The series creators wanted to give the viewer a sense of vast open spaces, so location shooting was used here instead of a green screen.
  • Anthony Hopkins and Evan Rachel Wood were the first actors the series producers reached an agreement with, and they were cast in the roles of Dr. Robert Ford and Dolores Abernathy, respectively.
  • Before his death in 2008, Michael Crichton was approached with an offer to write the screenplay for a remake of his own 1973 film, but the offer did not interest him.
  • The series creator, Jonathan Nolan, describes 'Westworld' as 'the next chapter in human history, in which we are no longer the lead characters.'
  • It was J.J. Abrams who suggested presenting the plot of the series from the perspective of androids rather than humans.
  • In the first season, a photo of the wife of William (played by Jimmy Simpson) briefly appears on screen. It was simply a photo of some woman in Times Square; however, many viewers recognized Claire Unabia, who appeared in the 2003 reality show 'America’s Next Top Model,' so Unabia was actually cast as William's wife in the second season.
  • 'Westworld' contains a number of references to Lewis Carroll's 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'—these include, for example, Dolores's blue dress and the tea party scene in the desert, which strongly resembles John Tenniel's canonical illustrations for 'Alice'. According to Nolan, there are several explicit and implicit connections in the series between the main character, Dolores, and Alice, the protagonist of Carroll's book; Carroll's book itself also appears in the series, and the characters read excerpts from it.
  • Filming for the pilot episode took place in July and August 2014 in Los Angeles.
  • Due to an editing error in the robbery scene in the first episode, Armistice first picks up a Winchester Model 1887 shotgun and begins firing it. However, in the following shots, she continues firing from a Winchester Model 1873 rifle, after which she fires the shotgun again. After exhausting the shotgun's ammunition, she puts it down and picks up that same rifle.
  • Miranda Otto appeared in the series pilot, after which she left the project to join the fifth season of the series "Homeland" (2011). The role of Teresa Cullen was taken over by actress Sidse Babette Knudsen.
  • Warner Bros. had dreamed of making a remake of 'Westworld' since the 1990s. In 1996, the film's screenwriter and director met with J.J. Abrams and asked him to write a script for the remake, but nothing came of it. In 2000, it was announced that Joel Silver had taken on the remake. Silver commissioned Richard d'Ovidio to write the script. In 2002, it was announced that Arnold Schwarzenegger would star in the lead role and serve as producer, with the script written by John Brancato and Michael Ferris. However, Schwarzenegger was soon elected Governor of California and left the project. In 2005, it became known that Tarsem Singh would direct. Two years later, Quentin Tarantino announced that he had been offered the director's chair. Another year later, Billy Ray was commissioned to write the script. In 2013, Abrams pitched the idea for a series to Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy.
  • Ben Barnes broke his leg the day before filming. Fearing he would lose his job, he told no one, making the limp a part of his character.
