What's left behind the scenes

  • Vulcan (played here by Corbin Bernsen) did not appear in the novel upon which the series is based. This character is based on the ancient Roman god of destructive and purifying fire. The novel's author, Neil Gaiman, told showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green that he had once driven through Birmingham, Alabama, and saw a 17-meter cast-iron statue of Vulcan at the entrance of a steel mill. The statue held a torch: if it burned green, it meant no workers had been injured in the past 24 hours; if it burned white, someone had suffered minor injuries; and red signified a fatality.
  • The slaves at the beginning of episode 2 speak Igbo, one of the official languages of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
  • In November 2013, the novel's author, Neil Gaiman, announced on Reddit that work on the series was still ongoing, but no longer with HBO. In February 2014, it became known that the screen adaptation rights had been acquired by the North American division of the British company FremantleMedia. On July 1 of the same year, it was revealed that the American cable network Starz was developing the series.
  • Nicolas Cage was approached to play Mr. Wednesday. He liked the script, but declined the offer, citing his involvement in another television project.
  • Initially, the first season was planned to have 10 episodes, but they later decided to merge episodes 3 and 4 into one, make the ending of the penultimate episode the season finale, and break the original season finale into pieces to be inserted into other episodes. As a result, the season ended up with 8 episodes.
  • The story of Laura, played by Emily Browning, was not in the novel; she was created specifically for the series.
  • In 2013, it was expected that HBO would produce a series based on 'American Gods.' It was intended to consist of six seasons, with each season containing ten to twelve episodes approximately one hour long. The plot of the first two seasons was to be based on the book, while the following four would serve as a continuation.
