What's left behind the scenes

  • The signature opening sequence, which the series used for nearly 20 years, was eventually changed in the 19th season to show the aftermath of the events from the feature film (the destruction of the glass dome, the Spider-Pig, etc.). Then, in 2009, when the series began airing in High Definition, a completely new opening was created.
  • Many of the series' characters were named after streets in Portland.
  • Bart Simpson made a brief appearance in the South Park episode 'Cartoon Wars Part II,' where, animated in the show's style, he argued with Eric Cartman over who was worse. Additionally, in one scene, he writes 'I hate Family Guy' on a wall, but he does so with his right hand rather than his left, as seen in The Simpsons' opening sequence.
  • The two hairs on Homer's head are named Archie and wicket.
  • Homer's mother, Mona Simpson, was named by screenwriter Richard Appel after his wife and Steve Jobs' sister, Mona Simpson.
  • In early episodes of the series, in the scene where Homer runs away from the plant after the whistle blows, there was an unnamed employee standing behind him eating a sandwich. He was later replaced by Burns and Smithers.
  • One episode shows a non-existent US flag with 47 stars, with the explanation that it was allegedly adopted when New Mexico had already become a state but Arizona had not (i.e., between January 6 and February 14, 1912). In reality, during the described time period, the 1908 flag with 46 stars was in use, as new stars were only added on July 4, 1912, when there were already 48 states.
  • In the opening sequence of the first episode of season 19, Bart writes the following on the chalkboard: 'I will not wait another 20 years to make another movie'.
  • In the episode 'Homer's Odyssey,' Smithers had dark hair, whereas in the episode 'There's No Disgrace Like Home,' his hair was blue, like Marge's.
  • All the characters in the series have four fingers on each hand. Five fingers are only seen on God, whom Homer encountered while in a coma caused by Bart.
  • In the second season's first Halloween special, one of the episode's three stories was based on Edgar Allan Poe's poem 'The Raven'.
