Short description

Get Smart is an American comedy television series that satirizes the secret agent genre. Created by Mel Brooks with Buck Henry, the show stars Don Adams, Barbara Feldon, and Edward Platt. Henry said they created the show by request of Daniel Melnick, who was a partner, along with Leonard Stern and David Susskind, of the show's production company, Talent Associates, to capitalize on "the two biggest things in the entertainment world today"—James Bond and Inspector Clouseau. Brooks said: "It's an insane combination of James Bond and Mel Brooks comedy." This is the only Mel Brooks production to feature a laugh track. The success of the show eventually spawned the follow-up films The Nude Bomb and Get Smart, Again!, as well as a 1995 revival series and a 2008 film remake. In 2010, TV Guide ranked Get Smart's opening title sequence at No. 2 on its list of TV's Top 10 Credits Sequences, as selected by readers.

What's left behind the scenes

Rumor has it that Agent 99 originally called herself Agent 69, but NBC censors felt it had a "sexual connotation." However, Barbara Feldon says that is not the case. According to her, the character was originally called Agent 100 "because she was 100 percent in everything," but screenwriter Buck Henry decided that 99 sounded more feminine.
When it came to Don Adams' fee, he was given a choice between a substantial weekly salary with no profit participation, or a share of the profits with a lower weekly salary. He chose the latter and it paid off.
Barbara Feldon is 5 cm taller than her co-star, so Adams either stood on a small pedestal to appear taller than her, or she had to slouch. Additionally, Feldon rarely wore high heels and tried to come to the set in flat shoes.
Edward Platt suffered from constant back pain, which is why he didn't appear on screen at all in several episodes, and in some, he was filmed only while sitting.
The general idea for the series was proposed by producer Daniel Melnik. As he later recounted, he wanted the main character's image to be based on the central figures of the James Bond and Pink Panther franchises, which were popular at the time.
