Short description

Hogan's Heroes is an American television sitcom that ran for 168 episodes from September 17, 1965, to July 4, 1971, on the CBS network. The show was set in a German prisoner of war camp during World War II. Bob Crane starred as Colonel Robert E. Hogan, coordinating an international crew of Allied prisoners running a Special Operations group from the camp. Werner Klemperer played Colonel Wilhelm Klink, the commandant of the camp, and John Banner was the inept sergeant-of-the-guard, Hans Schultz. The series was popular during its six-season run. In 2013, creators Bernard Fein through his estate and Albert S. Ruddy acquired the sequel and other separate rights to Hogan's Heroes from Mark Cuban through arbitration and a movie based on the show has been planned.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The plot of the black-and-white pilot episode featured a Russian character played by Leonid Kinski (1903-1998), an American actor of Russian descent. Kinski later refused to continue working on the series, as he felt uncomfortable performing in a comedy where other actors played Nazis.
  • It was originally intended that the action would take place in an ordinary American prison. However, the series creators, Bernard Fein (1926-1980) and Albert S. Ruddy, rewrote the script upon learning that NBC was already filming 'Campo 44' (1967), which was set in an Italian prisoner-of-war camp.
  • At the very beginning of the project, it was decided that all the action would take place in winter—with snow on the ground and frost patterns on the windows. This was done to avoid issues with narrative continuity, allowing episodes to be aired in any order. A significant portion of the filming took place during the summer, and even in the heat, the actors had to pretend it was cold and wear overcoats.
  • Richard Dawson stated that when he landed the role of Corporal Newkirk, the then-president of the CBS media conglomerate, Mike Dunn, asked him not to use his native Liverpool accent, but to speak in Cockney (one of the most well-known types of London vernacular). He felt that Cockney would sound more familiar to American viewers. Shortly after this decision was made, Beatlemania swept the country. The Beatles were from Liverpool, their members spoke with a Liverpool accent, and Americans as a whole became accustomed to it quite quickly.
  • Werner Klemperer (1920-2000) agreed to play Colonel Klink only after he was assured that the character's machinations would not be successful.
  • In the German dubbing, the greeting 'Heil Hitler' was often changed to 'Heil Krauter' (referring to medicinal herbs). Lines were also changed when the conversation turned to bombings. For example, if the Americans destroyed an ammunition factory, in the German version it became a toilet paper factory; and when Sergeant Schultz reported that the Allies had bombed Hamburg, it sounded as if the British aviation had dropped cakes onto enemy territory for propaganda purposes.
  • The series is set at the end of World War II (1939-1945), yet the women's clothing and hairstyles are from the 1960s.
  • Hogan and his men repeatedly contact a submarine by radio, which is invariably shown in a submerged state. Underwater communication required the use of extremely low frequencies, which were not discovered until after the war.
