What's left behind the scenes

  • Once the series gained popularity, its creator Garry Marshall (1934-2016) was asked to come up with something to promote reading among children. In one of the episodes, Fonzie decides to visit the library. That same week, the issuance of library cards across the country jumped by 500%.
  • Fonzie loved motorcycles, whereas the actor who played him, Henry Winkler, was scared to death of them. Scenes where Fonzie speeds on a motorcycle were usually filmed by attaching the bike to a platform towed by a truck.
  • Micky Dolenz, the vocalist and drummer of The Monkees, auditioned for the role of Fonzie. However, standing over 180 cm tall, he was much taller than the other actors, and the producers decided they wanted a cast of more or less similar height.
  • According to Henry Winkler, he copied some of Fonzie's gestures and mannerisms from Sylvester Stallone. Winkler and Stallone starred together in the low-budget drama 'The Lords of Flatbush' (1974), directed by Martin Davidson and Steven Verona. However, he vowed that while playing Fonzie, he would not comb his hair in a certain way or tuck a pack of cigarettes into a rolled-up sleeve.
  • Arthur 'Fonzie' Fonzarelli was originally intended to be named Arthur Maciarelli, nicknamed 'Mash.' (Maciarelli is the real surname of the show's creator, Garry Marshall.) When the series moved to ABC, the executives ordered Marshall to change the character's surname because the nickname would too closely remind viewers of the series 'M*A*S*H' (1972-1983) on a competing channel.
  • In the first episode, the hangout where the teenagers always spent their time was called 'Arthur's,' and it was changed to 'Arnold's' starting from the second episode.
  • In early episodes, Fonzie rides a Harley-Davidson motorcycle with an engine known as the Knucklehead. He was later switched to a 1949 Triumph model because it was easier for Henry Winkler to balance on.
  • When the series first premiered, network executives objected to Fonzie wearing a leather jacket. Garry Marshall was told that in such attire, the character inadvertently encouraged punks and 'various kinds of illegal activity.' Marshall countered by stating that Fonzie wore the leather jacket for safety reasons in case of a fall while riding. The response was that he could wear it, but only when riding his motorcycle. Following this, Marshall instructed the writers to only write Fonzie into the plot in situations where he could appear on screen in the leather jacket, which they did. As a result, Fonzie never appeared on screen without his leather jacket. The character quickly became popular, and the network executives stopped objecting to the jacket.
  • At first, the series strictly followed the era—its characters dressed and behaved as they would have in the 1950s. Over time, however, the show caught up with its own era, and by the end, the characters were wearing clothes that matched the spirit of the early 1980s.
  • Initially, the Cunninghams had three children. The eldest, Chuck, was soon written out of the series (allegedly leaving for school). In the final episode, Howard mentions how proud he is of his "two children."
  • The eldest of the Cunningham children was quietly removed from the show without explanation. Nowadays, when a character is written out of a series in this manner, it is called the "Chuck Cunningham Syndrome."
  • Linda Goodfriend first appeared in the series as Ralph's girlfriend, and only later took on the role of Lori Beth, Richie's friend and eventual wife.
  • Only the characters played by Henry Winkler and Tom Bosley (1972-2010) appeared in all 255 episodes. Marion Ross's character was absent from 3 episodes.
