What's left behind the scenes

Some of the spells are actually puns based on the producers' names—for example, 'murieta animata' is derived from the surname of executive producer Peter Maretta.
The Russo family has Mexican and Italian roots. The same applies to Selena Gomez, who played Alex, as she also has a mix of Mexican and Italian heritage. Jake T. Austin, who played Max, is of mixed Puerto Rican, Polish, and Argentine descent; David Henry (Justin) and David DeLuise (Jerry) are Italian, and Maria Canals-Barrera is Cuban.
The character of Principal Laritate is based on the comic book character Mr. Weatherby.
The role of Professor Crumbs was the final one for Ian Abercrombie. Shortly after the premiere of the final episode, the actor passed away at the age of 77.
At the time of the series' release, its finale drew the largest audience in the history of the Disney Channel.
